When one of my good friends left DNC, this book, “Into the Wild,’ appeared in my room. (I can only assume the coincidence is named Bevin!) Another member of my BC Crew also brought the book, so I sent mine home. I didn’t read as much out there as I had hoped, and this was pretty much the first book I started, halfway through in July/August. And “wow!” I said. I finished Chapter 6, Anza-Borrego, before the book was sent out, that being a notable chapter to many who are not huge fans of the book’s subject, Chris McCandless, aka Alexander Supertramp.
I’m really curious what others thought of the book, or the boy. This may also be a good time to test the ‘karma voting’ feature of this log too!
I quickly developed a great affinity with the character in the book, Chris, and was calling him my new friend to all on my crew. I think I was the only one who really liked the book at all on my crew, which surprised me a bit, especially since it’s a ‘National Bestseller,’ which was gifted and recommend to me. So! Thoughts? Input?
BTW: OT, I posted the wrong URL for my pictures in my email! It’s actually: http://hempy.dhs.org/~atallam/pictures/ids/ Sorry!
Tell me about Chris, why you like him, why you don’t. Sarah on my crew wasn’t a fan of Jon’s writing style either, which was kind of interesting too. And maybe even a little test, why do you think I like/appreciate him so? (I’m not entirely sure, I have some ideas..)
I thought it was kind of cool, before I started reading I looked at the map, and out of all the cities in Northern California, was this rinky town of Orick! The top of Humboldt County, and Which is ~1/2 hour south of my former home in Klamath!!!! So crazy! A town which I’m sure virtually noone has heard of.. sooooo wild…
Kiva (my BC Supervisor) said something about me and a bus in Alaska before we parted ways, but I’ve never been drawn to Alaska as so many of my cohorts have (though admittedly their fascination and love of it draws my curiosity), but, it was amusing nonetheless.

I am reading Into the Wild now and am as enthralled as I was with similar books. I read John Krakauer’s book on the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster, and was dying to read more about Beck Weathers. So I bought his book and rented the Everest DVD, which also had a riveting commentary by Beck that was very emotional. What an amazing human being!!!
Anyway, why do I identify with these crazies? At this point, though I am still mulling over things quite a bit, there are definitely themes on the despair for humanity, the desire for solitude, and the rejection of mainstream values in all of these books to which I can relate, be that degree however small. These people are tortured souls for whom any compassionate person can muster some empathy. I’m also oddly inspired by their willingness to put themselves and their ideals to the test, even though it was taken a bit too far and ended up being the cause for their demise. Wish I could elaborate, but no time right now.
Wonder what you think, though.
