Oh, Ho Chi Minh (Uncle or the City!), I barely knew yee! And yet I left yesterday, after I saw the Cu Chi Tunnels, which were kinda cool. The Viet Cong built all these tunnels under the city, so they could just come come into American Bases covert-status, some.. 200 km of them, iirc. Wild. I’m sad to have left Vietnam, I definitely could see having spent more time there. We finished up the country doing the Mekong Delta tour, then going to Phu Quoc island, which was white sand beaches and clear water, _really_ nice, but the tourists have found it (duh?), so there’s a huge degree of development, bungalows and the such.
NOTE: DO NOT FLY Air India! They suck, seriously. I flew into Bangkok around 2130, to await my 0240 flight to Mumbai (Bombay). And I could have scheduled a connecting flight to Bangalore around 10a, since my flight should have gotten in around 0820, but prior experience with Air India told me & my mom that I should schedule the next flight, which was 1400. Well! My flight from BKK didn’t leave until about 0900, and got to MUM at 1515!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What the?! Rediculous. Everybody was a bit pissed. The only compensation we got was to stay in the Silver Elite class lounge or something, which was amazingly not as impressive as I had expected. Yeah, they had some cakes, a little fruit, finger sandwiches, and lots of liquor, nice couches.. I dunno, it just didn’t seem like it made up for a 6-7 hr delay, ya know? Though, we didn’t choose Air India, they were the only option we were given, which was the same for another couple, so I can’t really say “NEVER fly Air India!,” especially if you’re trying to save money your carrier (ASEANA, Eva, etc..) will probably give them to you for the last leg of your flight, but.. we forewarned about what will happened.
I would say that it might be a small proof that Socialism isn’t designed for India, but I’d say the same about capitalism, so that might not help any..
I do kind of feel like Vietnam was more designed for capitalism though! But this is all another story.
So, I arrived in Bangalore tonight, my mom’s off to Shimoga, and I’m.. figuring out where to best go trekking, and with whom. The Western Ghats seem almost a definite place.
Maybe I’ll hit Kerala, we’ll see..
