In searching for the exact wording of the Cicero quote “Freedom is participation in power” I came across this extremely interesting page. It’s about power, but not in any way that I have seen it talked about before. He quotes different views on power, somehow seems to dismiss them all, but also talks about the power of our perspectives, the way we talk about “helping” others, and more. It impacted me in giving me a slice of perspective from the world of the blind, but I want to say it wasn’t, and isn’t, about that — it’s more.

After all, anything worthwhile has to be more thoughtful, deep and meaningful than the obvious meaning. Here’s a quote from the piece and a link to it, I thought it was amazing, and it really captivated me. What do you think?

Power denotes the ability to do what the person, organization, or country wants done at the time and in the way that the entity possessing power wants it done with minimal inconvenience. It is neither morally corrupt nor spiritually invigorating. It is neutral.

via Leadership and the Matrix of Power.

PS: Happy Holidays everyone!

(Okay, so I don’t actually believe those commercials that people should feel obligated or responsibility for other people and their actions, but it makes a catchy title.

But honestly. The polls show the majority of people in this country are against the Iraq war. I’ll assume (without any empirical evidence) that largely applies to my FB friends. So, why vote for a War candidate? I’m afraid that we often let the media write history for us, rather than remembering what had actually happened.
By that, I mean we have had (except possibly Carter?) nothing but war presidents since WW2. Lest we forget one of the most famous leaders (who was of course shut up, because people largely shutdown when they are left leader-less) in our country, he said:

The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today — my own country. – Martin Luther King Jr.

But I’m not the best spoken or most thoughtful, so check out this video which touches on social movements and the future of our country.

Don’t be mistaken. just look at recent history. Hussein asked us if we had any problems with us going into Kuwait, we said it wasn’t any of our business, then boom — Gulf War, Colin Powell, GBush Sr, et al, pounded him. Gulf war (“Desert Storm”)
So then Clinton decides he’s very unhappy with Iraq having Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs), so convinces Saddam to abandon his weapons. But he doesn’t believe Saddam, so he imposes sanctions on Iraq. Several reputed organizations have reported that ~567,000 Iraqi children died under these sanctions, Clinton’s Secretary of State, when asked about this on 60 minutes, said “the price is worth it.”
Later, Bush got into office, and the Democrats authored and sponsored a resolution of war against Iraq because of these WMDs that they said they didn’t have, and Bush happily signed and went along. Rumsfeld, Powell and more pushed it, including lying to us, and THE UN!
All the names I have just mentioned Should GO TO JAIL. I didn’t mention Clinton’s bombings of Iraq, Somalia, Kosovo, Congo, Afghanistan and more. Nor did I mention Bush Sr or Jr’s other bombing/military escapades. Do I need to? How many wars is too many? What’s your breaking point? Do you have one?
When will we listen to a visionary like MLK?

Obama and McCain have talked sternly about Iran and its nuclear program. (for YEARS)
(Yes, India, Israel, NKorea, China, and others have nuclear programs.)
Obama has pushed for troops in Pakistan, more in Afghanistan, and IN THE USA. (Look it up, or talk to soldiers — restationed from Iraq HERE. To guard against civil disobedience, demonstrations and unrest.)
All these things have been done.

What else do they need to do, to say, to push, to support? Ironically, despite Clinton’s militarism, he shrank the military a bit. But Obama and McCain remain committed to increasing the size of the military.

We have had decades long bans on offshore oil drilling, new nuclear power plants, and have been fighting the pollution of coal-fired power plants since RN’s Clean Air Act (among other legislations) AT LEAST.
Obama and McCain have supported removing all of this regulations.

Are you really going to vote for them? Are these things you really support?
If so, you’re buying the corporate line, not the scientist or researcher’s views/papers/research on the implications of ANY of this.

The economy, you say?

Reagan is often blamed for much. He had this trickle-down economics theory, saying that if you cut the taxes on the richest people/corporations, people would prosper.
So now we have a faltering economy. The government waits months and months, and does nothing about it. Nothing about the foreclosures. The unemployment. etc. All of a sudden Bush says “Let’s bailout!” Obama and McCain say “Great!” (along with the Democrats, the Republicans were mostly against it. Ironically?)

Let’s not forget that this was tried in ~1931, and resulted in the Great Depression. The only thing that brought us out? Massive infrastructure projects, FDR’s — giving jobs to PEOPLE.
This bailout though? It’s a clear message — helping out the bankrupt wall street gamblers, because if they’re helped, the economy’s helped. How’s that? Trickle down.
This makes sense because..?

And I’m not even advocating anything here, ironically. Maybe we should help people with their home foreclosures. It sure as hell would have been a LOT cheaper than $700 BILLION. But if we don’t, whatever. People get burned. Corporations get burned.
Somebody learns a lesson. (One hopes).
So I could see reason of someone saying “let’s not help people who are failing economically,” but it’s hypocrisy to say “Let’s help corporations that are failing because of their greed.” It’s ridiculous. It’s unfair. It’s bankrupting our country — destroying our economy.

Patti Smith sings, “Awake from your slumber.”
Please. This is crucial. The time is now. We need to stand up.

Don’t waste your vote on corporate candidates that don’t stand for you or your issues.
Make a stand.
Slavery ended, people of color and woman got the right to vote, and many many other great things happened in this country because people took to the polls and VOTED For candidates that represented their issues. Slowly, the country changed, and the big institutions/corporations/

gov’t had to take on this positions.
Now we have an empire building administration, removing civil liberties in astonishing amounts.
Are you not going to send a message with your vote? That these are NOT issues that you support?

For the Obama crowd: Don’t worry, Obama’s been selected. He’s the new president, the powers-that-be have decided that. The polls agree. And anyways, most of you leave in California, a safe democrat win state. It’s easy to vote your conscience.
Without being a hypocrite (eg voting against prop8, but then voting for a candidate that is firmly AGAiNST gay marriage.)

What difference will it make? If I didn’t make the case above, then remember only the above quote, and then this one:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead

And LISTEN to great thinkers in our country. Noam Chomsky. Howard Zinn. They have made it clear that they will not vote for the establishment candidates, and they don’t advocate for anyone else to either. Zinn, of A People’s History of the United States, one of the key textbooks speaking of the struggles of real people, of Social Justice, in this country.
Or listen to the Economist, who endorsed George W Bush, and is now endorsing Obama. The choice is yours. Choose carefully, or our voices will all continue to be suppressed.

I visited this NGO called SCOPE in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. As their website seems currently inaccessible, you can take a look at their a photo album which showcases some of their projects.

I was a little frustrated during my time spent with them. They didn’t have the vision for projects like greywater re-use, or affecting the sewage outfall from normal houses. They also seemed un or under-interested in spreading gardening, notably on a household scale which could not only directly affect hunger, but also give a place for their compost to go, easily closing the loop.
Here’s a cool Wired story: “Build a Square foot Garden,” which helps illustrate that a lot can be down with a little. (Bit of space, in this case.)

I also ran across a WSJ video, posted on Conscious Consuming‘s blog, about Urban Farming. I’m a really big advocate of urban farming. Partially because people are leaving the “Rural”/”countryside,” but also because that’s where the people are, and there’s a _lot_ of wasted space in cities. People should be close to their food, in location, understanding, and more.

I think I had a lot more to say on this, but going to close this post at this..

Wow, as of nov’11, most links in this post are dead! Eek.

I could have blogged about my time at the WTS, or in Delhi generally, but this was interesting (and important?) enough that I thought I’d just make sure it was online+accessible to folks. To see my pictures though, you can check on Flickr. Oh, and after typing this out I realize that it’s already online! Eh, maybe i’ll add more to this post or change it later on.

“Following a successful World Toilet Summit-2007 (WTS 2007) it has been noted that there is a need to accelerate the progress on achieveing the MDG on sanitation by 2015. The participants advocate to reconfirmation of the pledge that nations took at Johannesburg in 2002. WTS 2007 adopts the Delhi Declaration on Sanitation- 2007:

Increase awareness and political will, prioritise sustainable sanitation, the importance of achieving MDG #7 and other goals and also persuade national leaders to take further measures in this regard.

Move to mobilise: Governments, UN Agencies, Financial Institutions, Corporate and local Bodies, Sanitation Service Providers and other Stakeholders through strong partnership and collaboration to undertake the required steps to increase sanitation coverage.

Undertake data collection, annual review, monitoring and effective actions to scale-up sustainable sanitation programmes and strengthen policies at both the national and international level.

Prepare and plan activities as well as a National Roadmap for the International Year of Sanitation 2008 in collaboration with all key stakeholders and important partners.

Ensure and enhance financial allocation and support through national budgets and developmental partner allocations to sustained progress on sanitation.

Develop and strengthen institutional R&D and human resource capacity at all levels to generate action and implementation int he sanitation sector and water supply.

Promote knowledge exchange programmes on available sustainable sanitation technologies and behaviors in all regions.

Advocate with National Governments to set specific sanitation goals and targets as well as help local communities and educational institutions to gain access to instituional finance.

Organise regional and sub-regional conferences and workshops, declare Sanitation Awards to recognize and support regional works.

Implement Sustainable sanitation programme through a demand-driven approach facilitating efficient marketing mechanisms.

Prioritise school sanitation, health and hygiene programs.

Implement child-friendly facilities which are both accessible and relevant to cultural and regional needs.

Address region-specific gender issues by ensuring sanitation facilities for women and the ‘girl child’.

Facilitate a paradigm shift from disposal-oriented systems to reuse and recycle oriented sanitation systems with a Quality control approach.”

Subject: HSU degree granted!

Okay, maybe it’s not so exciting to you, but since the most important parts are short:

Dear Ajay,

On behalf of Humboldt State University, congratulations on earning your degree! Your official date of graduation is 16-May-07.
[.. extra stuff you don't care about...]
Congratulations again, and best wishes for future success and personal satisfaction.

(Sent by one Travis Brunner, but signed by Hillary A. Dashiell of the Registrar’s office, which I think is a funny inconsistency, plus it’s from the former’s personal HSU address. Silly ppl. heh) (PS: As aforementioned, my Grad pics are online.)
I do like that last line though.. isn’t that what it’s all about?

So I started thinking, “Nah, they wouldn’t want to read about me graduating, my degree and all that (esp since so many of the FB’ers reading this are still in “school”)” and thought instead of quoting another old email I found, fwd’d from my school’s President, Rollin Richmond, but originally from the Graduation Alliance Pledge Coordinators.

As we celebrate Commencement and the 20th Anniversary of the Graduation Pledge Alliance we invite you to join the Alliance by taking the pledge:

“I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work.”

The Humboldt Spirit encompasses the core values of the Graduation Pledge. Humboldt State University is, as an institution, committed to being exemplars of stewardship in learning and promoting social and environmental responsibility. We serve as a multifaceted prism for students in recognition of the need for intellectual and practical development, relevant community involvement and a vehicle for outreach beyond academics.
[...stuff you don't care about..]
In taking the pledge below, you will be joining in solidarity with thousands of graduates from over 100 Universities, Colleges and High Schools worldwide which originated here at Humboldt State in April of 1987 by a volunteer group called Student Citizens for Social Responsibility. We encourage you to take a proud part of our academic heritage and professional legacy to the County of Humboldt, the State of California, the United States of America and the World over.

[sent by] Jacque Lee and Dawne Abdul Al-Bari
Interesting, exciting, no? True to name, this is the “Graduation” Pledge, but .. well, I don’t need to go into that analysis with you. Just because some folks sign a piece of paper around graduation time (and some only to get that neat free pin they gave out), it of course doesn’t mean much. And what of those that aren’t graduating (forget Humboldt, maybe even not from University or even High School, as is true with several of my friends), do they feel honor and duty-bound towards a better world? Or because they are “un/under-educated,” do they not give a shit? As Krishnamurthi might say, these are important questions I ask you. I have some ideas about this, and experience in talking to such friends (notably the folks that prob won’t ever official graduate from HS, save less Uni), but I can not give anyone any of my conclusions, though I can share as appropriate.

So the real question: What do you think about this pledge? do you like the sound of the words? of the message? If yes, is it something that you would take into your own life? As I graduated I talked, just a touch with just a few folks about the pledge (GP hereon), and some used, what in retrospect are pretty stale, lines like about “realisticness” and needing to get a job for “money,” and similar nonsense. Why nonsense? They clearly neither properly read nor understood the pledge. It says nothing about not taking a job which kills people or destroys the environment. (The biggest reasons I can think of to not take the pledge in ones’ own life). It just says that one will consider such factors, and try to improve on the Social Conseq (I incl env consequences in that) in their organization. Wow, that’s asking too much? If so, then.. yeah, well, i’ll try to avoid this opportunity for pessimism+negativity for you and me both.
But really, I’m not here to bash anyone or otherwise criticize them for their decisions, I just want us all to think a little bit, and hopefully I put a seed in their, your, and my own mind by talking, and writing. (resp) I’d still love to hear thoughts. As I’ve been striving in my life, I’ll not judge. Am I wrong, is this actually unrealistic? Or once we’re “caught up the grind,” will we be unable to strive for better? Will that be a spot we wish to be in? If not why do we think about such possibilities, won’t such thoughts simply just take us straight to that place we say we don’t want? I mean, if you focus+think about something a lot, you’ll probably get it, for better or for worse.

I was thinking of tagging fellow grads in this post on FB, but since it changed to be GP-centered (as was the theme of the (Oct) 2007 Leadership Conference: “Ignite: Lighting the Passion Within” at my alma mater*, which hopefully my Humboldt friends were able to attend, and of which a few of my close Humboldt friends helped organize. (Actually, I’ll tag them so maybe they could share a thought, after thinking so hard+much on the GP.))

Some might say I’m in the “lucky” position of being an Environmental Sciences grad who will inherently be working in a field for the better life of others/the world. I say no. Everyone is in the same place, only different. More importantly, even among folks directly working in the fields of Social Justice and (under its umbrella) Environmentalism, aren’t necessarily doing anything to make their world better. Yes, I’m saying that I think that some are taking us in the opposite direction we should be going. I can give examples on demand, but let’s not lose focus, as examples are a good way to forget what we’re talking about.

So, with all this, and a fear of rambling (present or future) I close. :) Hope all of you are well, and yes, I am totally stoked. It was a long time coming. The shift of life direction is a bit scary (yes, in theory this is what I’ve been looking forward to for so long, but now..!) Where to go from here? (As oh so many others also ask themselves) Because it is a change. And there’s no more recipe, no prescription to follow, from here on out. I can do good, or I can do bad in the world. Intentionally or not (because, as you might remember, Ivan Illich told, ”To Hell With Good Intentions“.) What will happen.. I don’t know. I’m not a bad person, and ppl like me (unintentional Stewart Smalley quote!), but.. that doesn’t necessarily lead to much. That may not make sense, no worries! I’d like to do good. I don’t know if I’m doing anything good while on this India trip now, or if it’ll really lead to something/where cool, but.. I do think I’m going somewhere. With that, take care, and be well my friends. I think fondly of many of you often.

Namaste,

There are many blog posts that I have been meaning to do, and this one probably would have been one to be time-expired by now, but no, it turns out its not. I’ll keep this relatively short of my commentary though. (relatively speaking) Nobody is really talking about Hurricane Katrina anymore, which may speak to many things. Our much-spoken of MTV-like attention spans, the fact that we’re always obsessed with “moving on,” maybe even that we don’t like to think about things that are wrong in the world that we can actually do something about, because that takes work, and (supposedly) we’re a lazy people. Hm, scrap that last bit, I’ll think that over later. The reason I decided that this was not a dated blog entry is in thinking of one of the beautiful people that (prob b/c of my ”job” as an LGA) I’ve had the pleasure of meeting this year, Leanne Sutton. Leanne went to areas affected by the Hurricane, and was continuing the work that various friends of mine have engaged in during different points of time since the disaster struck. I’ve been a person who has been a bit skeptical or otherwise weary both of Christians and Christian groups in my life (for various reasons that need not be delved into here), but I have to give it up to groups or people that find niches, or areas of need, and give, selflessly of themselves. Leanne went with Campus Crusade for Christ (the other CCC , for the second year in a row. To hear from her is amazing, so I unfortunately will not try to recount any of her tales for you for fear of diminishing them.

Instead, I’ll share with you others accounts from Katrina. There’s a dude named Chris who works for Cisco that is from New Orleans. I met him at an SVLUG meeting’s after-dinner, and it was amazing. He was doing work WITH relief, awesome! I’ve read Kevin’s email (coming below), and heard some accounts from various folks, but this was REALLY interesting because he was a techie in the disaster zone, aka someone I could really relate to. So, here are Chris’s post-Katrina accounts of the scene down in New Orleans.
Next, a brief tale of a group at HSU. Friends of mine (among many others in the world), the closest of which is Kristina Katia Lindsay, were really affected by the tragedy in New Orleans and wanted to do something about it. An adage from my homies in the CCC (California Conservation Corps :) was about ”finding a need and filling it,” and this is exactly what these cats did. They looked, and found/realized that many libraries, important centers of knowledge (and etc/etc) were ravaged, and there were lists of books that schools had requested to help them reshelf. Sometimes people who try to “help” others are critiqued, for so many different reasons. (Some valid, probably many not) But this seems like an amazing way to go–Look for how others are asking for your assistance, and hop in there. So they proceeded, and formed a club on campus, “Books Building Bridges,” and started collecting needed books from folks around Humboldt county. My roommate’s (then) girlfriend Leah also got involved, which was great that I got to hear more accounts of their work, shortly before they were to leave to deliver the books. (Wow, what dedication!!) They got there, and ended up finding SO much need independent of book deliveries, and so ended up doing some of the same work that Leanne was still continuing to do over this past spring break – mucking houses, etc. Just slightly toxic work, unfortunately for friends like John T. Carter (who went in spring break of 2006 with Crusade) who are allergic to mold. Oops, I’m not supposed to be writing a lot, so read their tales (and see their pix!) on their website, of their time in Pass Christian, Mississippi.

Lastly, I’ll share with you the account of my friend Kevin Livingston (who was on my CCC King’s Canyon Trail Crew in 2004 (pix), hence a few of the references are for us.)

ok, theres more that i can type about this than i can handle so i will try to consolidate as much as i can. the past 7 days have been insane, going through many different emotions and stresses. first let me say that i am fine and doing great, working about 90-100 hours a week with cort furniture rental. the population of baton rouge 250,000 has doubled in three days! lots of work. traffic nightmares. people on buses with nothing but a bag. safety scares of riots or looting or crime. but really its just b.s. the coast of louisiana needed repair at the tune of 18 billion and theyve been asking for it for years. gov says no over and over, so they say ok but new orleans will be underwater one day. well that day is here and now it will cost the gov 100 billion. go figure. people here are pissed at the federal gov and pretty much everyone for letting the poor die in new orleans.
nobody did anything and that goes for big corporations like exxon who definately have the resources and money to have savved those people, instead we all left them there to die to the street gangs, the water, the diseases. the storm here in town was just a lot of wind and rain, not too bad but we lost power at 6am monday, and didnt get it back until saturday, good thing i know how to make a stove out of a coke can, and i did! ate ramen and lipton noodles. the area is in controlled chaos. i really dont know sometimes, i couldve written books in the past week but i am at a point where i am just burying my head in work and i feel good, working my butt off from 8 to 11 or 6 to 1130 one day. hard work, 5 3rd floors with sleeper sofas at night good stuff. anyway i keep thinking about hanging out with agnes in new orleans, telling her to take a good look cause one day it will be underwater. eerie. well heres my personal story about my sisters best friend in new orleans that brought it home closest to me. she stayed in new orleas through the storm to take care of the animals at the shelter hospital she worked for.
afterwards they had arranged for a reefer truck to get the animals out and the night before it was to come they had to lock themselves in a room and put the 2 meanest dogs they had outside while all night the looters shot and broke windows there and up and down the street, the dogs barking all night and possibly saveing their lives. the next day the truck came and that was the last we heard of her for 3 days, hopeing that they didnt get hijacked, but we didnt know, then we finally heard from her and they made it out. its like escape from new york. can you believe some poor animal workers organized to get a truck and rescue animals from this war zone yet the gov. cant evacuate poor black people? i bet people will say that its horrible they rescued animals instead of people, but they did their part they had a mission to do and they did it, if everyone wouldve done it, it wouldnt be an issue, and imagine listening to the radio reports of looting and chaos, and then living through the chaos and then pick up people on the way out, expecting someone to kick you and the animals out of the truck and leaving you behind or shooting you? they are heroes if you ask me and they found almost all the animals homes once they got them here to baton rouge.
she said she will never ever go back to new orleans and i dont blame her. it is an awful place and now the country will see exactly how bad the crime is there. pay attention, if there is ever a bad earthquake in ca or something else, this needs to be studied on how to handle and not mishandle these things. anyway im fine. doing good. hope all is well elsewhere.
kevin

Kevin wrote a little later (Sep8’05) a followup email:

thanks to everyone about their concern for me and the area. i think everything will be fine, but yes it is going to take a whole lot of work. if people are wondering what to do out there, cause i hear and have the feeling that since its over here and not directly there that people arent too concerned about it, the best thing to do for the area is to make sure people are aware that this really is a big deal, its not as bad but could be compared to losing los angeles to a fire or quake or something. remind people how important it is to take care of the environment. the stories i hear from the survivors are horrible, i hope they come out with real stories in books. anyway,
take care,
kevin

Interestingly? enough, the Yahoo Ad (sidenote: I hate ads) at the bottom of Kevin’s email was “Click here to donate to the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.” with a link to the Red Cross

Anywho, that’s all from me for now, hope everyone is well, and keep up the good thoughts and good works everybody! I am so inspired by all the great things all those mentioned in this post did.. Words do you no justice. -@

After posting – I accidentally received an email with a professional photographer’s pics of Katrina aftermath! And I didn’t link to Chris’s pics above either. ttfn..

Aaah..

1st reminder) so, Boycott any (at least new, on the Manifesto label) Dead Kennedy’s stuff, because they took Jello to court for years to take all the rights back so they (Easy Bay Ray et al) could sell the rights to songs to Levi’s and the such.

So! Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County had a fundraiser, a talk by Jello Biafra, former DK lead singer, now social activist and of the Alternative Tentacles (who has Wesley Wills on their label, which is what they started playing after we walked into the room. (KB Room on campus here at HSU.)) Sliding scale, $8-25, supposed to start at 6 (didn’t until after 6:45p), and I just got back a little while ago. Yeah, he can talk for a few minutes. And you thought *I* was verbose!!
It was interesting, for sure. I’d heard his name before, and was talking about him with some other people years ago, either something related to Nader in ’00 or (relatedly?) him running for something around then as a Green Party candidate. However, I didn’t really know much about him before this week, and there was a small piece about him in the campus paper, the Lumberjack, and a mention (possibly an article I didn’t see?) in the North Coast Journal (.com): “At the Kate Buchanan Room Saturday get an earful from former Dead Kennedy vocalist Jello Biafra, who has become something like a punk rock Noam Chomsky, offering his considered opinions on current events in provocative, scintillating rants.“

ANYWHO! To the protein (carbs?) of the story! (You might need to hit the link for more below this)

What did I think of this guy? I saw it with James and Erin (and Michelle who bailled out early because it was too long or something), both of whom Really liked him, a lot. I saw a few random guys later that were saying some of the same. I didn’t care much for the first part (that went until 9pm-ish..!), because it had a lot of Ad hominems (“ad homs” for short/Debate speak) in it, which is exactly what I didn’t like about Michael Moore. The second part got a lot better though. He talked about many things, a lot of statistics that were quite interesting, many of which debunked the “Red State, Blue State” idiocy (I thought I was the only one who thought that was moronic!), his talk was “Iraq-naphobia”, so he talked about some “Middle East” history that was way cool, politics stuff.. Early in his talk he tried to tell the Kerry supporters not to be permanently jaded and all, rather to consider it a baptism. As I never cared much for Kerry that didn’t necessarily apply to me, but it was cool. There was a lot of stuff, particularly in the “MidEast” part of him talking, that was kind of depressing, but it was _very_ important to hear, and have affect you, or at least me. He did end up bringing the tone of his talk and message to be motivational and encouraging at the end. He listed things he wanted to see when he ran for Mayor of SF (which he still believes in and wants put out there), as well as some more recent things that’s he’s thought about, that people should think about, and help push for. To be proactive, since that’s the important part and thing, and the one thing I mentioned that Michael Moore had right too.

The part about his talk that surprised me the most was his bashing of Gavin Newsom, the current mayor of San Francisco. (Who I coulda sworn Jello said got in by a sort of landslide, though he also claimed that the green party candidate almost had it, so I don’t know which is true.) I heard an interview with him on KQED-FM (SF NPR affiliate), talking about the hotel workers’ strike, and it sounded like he really cared, was very thoughtful.. generally a good guy, you know? Maybe this is just a case of Jello not liking him because he’s not “liberal enough” or something. If the more extremist remarks out of people like Jello are what a politician needs to be in office, then I don’t think that’s what I need to see in a candidate. And San Francisco was trying to push that way cool.. what was it? Like 10-20c tax for each plastic bag for grocery stores, that’s so awesome.

Here’s Jello, off the linked site above:

* [OT] Linkage to the max in this entry, huh? I went to a talk, “Blackboard vs. Moodle” put on by (?) on campus a few days ago, which was way interesting. The developer mentioned that one of the cooler features of Moodle (asides from the option to email you new forums (or all new content?)), was a Glossary. Any time the professor mentions a word with a glossary entry, or a student in one of their posts, it AUTOMATICALLY links that word to the glossary link. (A per class glossary, as I recall.) Which is _WAY_ cool and useful! Much better than going to a dictionary and trying to figure out which definition or how it applies, and sometimes way easier than going back to your book. Genius! So, that’s pretty much the style of linking I’m using here. And Erin just told me that’s what she does/uses her web log (on lj) for, and.. ya know? It seems so obvious!
