Californication meets Tranpacificism

There are many blog posts that I have been meaning to do, and this one probably would have been one to be time-expired by now, but no, it turns out its not.  I’ll keep this relatively short of my commentary though.  (relatively speaking) Nobody is really talking about Hurricane Katrina anymore,  which may speak to many things.  Our much-spoken of MTV-like attention spans, the fact that we’re always obsessed with “moving on,” maybe even that we don’t like to think about things that are wrong in the world that we can actually do something about, because that takes work, and (supposedly) we’re a lazy people.  Hm, scrap that last bit, I’ll think that over later. Not really much to say..

A few weeks ago Jen Majka (one of my boss’s coworkers) sent out this article from the UCLA Newspaper.. Blame Asians @ UCLA.. (and possibly related, that HigherEd is Too Asian, which is not from a student, but a publication!)
Then a few days ago she sent an article about the UCLA Student getting tasered (Story on ABCnews) Here’s some good stuff, a story on Slashdot! about it, with a video link.

Better yet! my friend Ali, who is well-written, has done a good writeup, with video included.

THEN the muslim Imams got booted from the plane for praying.
Now Michael Richards is .. being very representative of reality, I guess? Check out “Kramer” on video.
(That could relate to the Students Storming Minutemen Presentation at Columbia time.. a sort of, it’s been labeled the “free speech” vs fascism debate)

Aaah..

1st reminder) so, Boycott any (at least new, on the Manifesto label) Dead Kennedy’s stuff, because they took Jello to court for years to take all the rights back so they (Easy Bay Ray et al) could sell the rights to songs to Levi’s and the such.

So! Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County had a fundraiser, a talk by Jello Biafra, former DK lead singer, now social activist and of the Alternative Tentacles (who has Wesley Wills on their label, which is what they started playing after we walked into the room. (KB Room on campus here at HSU.)) Sliding scale, $8-25, supposed to start at 6 (didn’t until after 6:45p), and I just got back a little while ago. Yeah, he can talk for a few minutes. And you thought *I* was verbose!!
It was interesting, for sure. I’d heard his name before, and was talking about him with some other people years ago, either something related to Nader in ’00 or (relatedly?) him running for something around then as a Green Party candidate. However, I didn’t really know much about him before this week, and there was a small piece about him in the campus paper, the Lumberjack, and a mention (possibly an article I didn’t see?) in the North Coast Journal (.com): “At the Kate Buchanan Room Saturday get an earful from former Dead Kennedy vocalist Jello Biafra, who has become something like a punk rock Noam Chomsky, offering his considered opinions on current events in provocative, scintillating rants.“
