Short version: INTRUDER ALERT!

I’m actually not going to write all that much more than that, but i’ll give you the quick run-down. I’m writing this post much after the fact, so i don’t remember all of the details, but somehow.. we realized that our mail server was sending out massive volumes of email. Email we didn’t authorize. This realization may have happened after i realized mail i tried to send out to someone got blocked, and assumed it was in error, more likely due to our lack of rDNS (our IP address doesn’t reverse, that is, it doesn’t resolve back into a name.. *shakes fist at colo provider!*). Alas, that was not the case. (more…)

Another month, another phone, another carrier. (The pattern continues.. right? :)
However, this past month has seen me on a new platform, webOS. They’ve both got Linux in their hearts, but they’re done very differently. These are both non-standard when it comes to Linux distributions, but in very different ways. Neither uses Linux’s standard “X” windows server. Before I started to use this platform I found that there was a google Voice app (gDial Pro), great! (Turns out it was discontinued by the time i started using the platform.. d’oh!) I also noticed a blog post from Joey (of Debian fame) about Debian on the Palm Pre. (For some reason I had misinterpreted that and told BillK that the Pre ran Debian or some variant, oops.) How cool is that! I haven’t heard about people running a Debian chroot on Android. (Googles.. then realizes not having heard doesn’t mean it’s not happened :)

Another month, another [android] phone, and carrier, to play with.
Short story: I don’t care much for this phone, or T-Mobile.

It’s been the better part of my month (that i can cancel within and get the payment for the phone back (paid full price for the phone, per JohnT’s recommendation)), and T-Mobile’s supposed to be the cheapest carrier, and Motorola’s supposed to be a wizard at designing cell phones, but I’m not seeing either. My bill looks similar to what I was paying on Sprint, though actually much less clear. Minutes-wise? That’s where Sprint was supreme. Their policy? UNLIMITED mobile-to-mobile calls. OMG. I ended up using something like 100-200 of minutes that were not counted in that, with the bulk of my minutes being placed to others with mobile phones, in retrospect unsurprisingly. I pretty much ran out of minutes w/ my TMo phone and had to use it sparingly in the end. Not a fun feeling. (Might as well be back on prepaid if i want to be worried about per-minute usage.) So we (me and Michael) bought some new drives for the server. Our current (250GB?) drive is getting a bit full (says Michael, as I look at it now it seems fine to me! More free HDD space than my HDD at home has! heh..). And we have more capacity need issues.
So, partially on both of our wishes, we purchased the Western Digital Caviar “Green” drives. (WD10EADS 1TB 32MB Cache SATA)
It seems we were both a bit excited about the prospect of decreased power consumption, especially as we were increasing our footprint with the larger drive. However, it’s been .. pretty much.. bad news. The performance is pretty horrible. (more…)

So the time has come..
I never wanted a cell phone. My parents got me one without asking me in 2001. I thought that was stupid for several reasons, one of which being that i could probably just get one from work. I ended up doing that, went into work, and said “Peter, so when do I get that cell phone,” or some similarly presuming fashion. I don’t know whether he knew i was playing around, with me acting like we had had a conversation about this before. I never did ask him, but he did get me a cell phone. Everyone in our group was using the Nextel* phones, with their patented “push-to-talk” technology. For those unfamiliar, this was their walkie-talkie-like functionality. Instead of having to call someone, you pulled up their short code, held down a button on the side, and spoke, and they would hear you. It’s was pretty brilliant. While it was possible that i tricked my boss into giving me a phone, in the end, the joke was on me. (more…)
